Strange people

So I had jury duty today, something I had lots of time for with my 19 credit schedule and all...but hey, civic duty and all that. Oddly enough, there was no wi fi connection and all the work I had taken with me to do depended on it. I was able to work around it a bit by running to a cafe and copy-and-pasting enough for me to get something done.

One of the other things about jury duty is being forced to listen to other people's conversations, so I took the time to jot this down...no interwebs = more "listening" time.

I am sitting next to two people who seem to want to deny themselves all of life's pleasures. The words “I had nightshades last night and look what it did to me”-- “I was served eggplant at a dinner I was invited to”-- OMFG! Someone DARED to serve you a NIGHTSHADE! And you also teach French? Wow you sound like a great person to hang with! The poor soul listening to her is going to randomly “take her kids off dairy” for no apparent reason!

They have so far discussed in great detail pro-biotics, colonics, liver cleansing, rolphing and other methods of torture in the name of health.

These are both very skinny, shrewish looking women, one younger, one older and I guess this dietary Naziism must be some sort of way to exert control over their lives. I always wonder why it is always upper middle class white women who do this sort of thing? I mean really? What is the point?

Dinner (or lunch) and a SHOW!

So I had lunch with a friend today, she suggested a place near her office downtown I had not been to before called Cafe 54 on Pennington. cafe54.org The place was hopping, and the downtown lunch crowd is always a bit intense. She informed me after we found a table, they use some folks with disabilities on their staff. This was not immediately noticeable, but soon became apparent when someone came to bus our dirty table and it took three trips and a lot of muttering, then later when a terrified looking young woman came and asked us if we wanted bread, we said "yes" but then our food came and my friend turned her bread down when she came back. She looked up and was clearly startled and unsure what to do with the two plates with rolls on them in her hands. I said "I'd like my bread thank you" the spell was broken and she was clearly relieved to be able to hand over one plate. To top all of this off the second room of the place was reserved for a function that had the already "somewhat high strung" staff in a tizzy...needless to say this made everything even more HILARIOUS! And to top it all off, the food was really good and very well priced. I will definitely be heading back there!

Break

I need one...Not just because I'm tired and worn out no! I am actually incapable of learning anything else at this time. I need a break. Fortunately it is technically spring break and I am done with my mid-terms. I do however have math homework that needs to be done, along with a ton of reading and some papers I need to write. So, ya it's SPRING BREAK!

Original Picasso in Shopper Ad!

incredulous

The hubby and I like to walk to the store.

We like walking because it gets us out of the house for a bit and we can bring the dog and kill lots of birds with stones etc. Because we usually take the dog with, one of us (me) has to wait outside while the other shops. Today while waiting, I decided to take a gander at the "Tucson Shopper" a paper like the "Dandy Dime" or whatever local permutation you may have. The Shopper always has ads for odd items like "Antique lamp set NO SHADE $40" and other odd things today however I saw this and well...

...if you can't read it ,the ad reads        "Original Picasso Painting with certification, $5000 obo. 748-8020"

That's in the 520 area code if any of you are interested!

Of all the odd ads I have read this takes the cake! Really? I mean an ACTUAL Picasso?
I wouldn't want to go to one of those fancy "Art Dealers" or nuthin!

She is awesome!

She got aClean bill of health from the vet who thinks she is mostly boxer anyway and aside from a couple of minor accidents and some laundry room door chewing she has been PERFECT! She continues to walk beautifully on the leash even with kids/dogs/traffic and can be led by our 4 year old. She is sweet, affectionate and listens to NO well.

YAY!

Pound Puppy!

Okay, Christmas was great we had a big party here at our house with all our family here. New years was mellow and nice. The big event of the holiday break is...WE GOT A DOG! She is a serious pound puppy, under weight, sores on her feet, teats still swollen from a recent litter...and mostly pit bull. We have a lot of these dogs here in our town. I wanted a young female dog and she was so sweet with our son and walks beautifully on a leash. We picked her up yesterday after she had been spayed and so far it is going well. She is house trained (thankfully) and seems to listen and mind well. She still is not eating much yet but hopefully a few weeks will cover some of those bones. She goes to see our vet on Wednesday...I hope she is healthy.

almost...maybe?

Wow I think I am pretty close to done!
I have a math class tomorrow and one more final (math, comprehensive but should be easy) and that's it!

sigh...this semester has kicked my butt. I am really looking forward to digging in to housework, x-mas stuff, and some concentrated mom time with my kid...it'd be nice to actually have a date with the hubby but I've given up on that idea!

I am still having anxiety about my grades (likely all A's but I still stress) hopefully some therapeutic cookie and candy making will chill me out. Next semester should be less hectic only 13 instead of 16 units. I know there are people out there that go to school full time, work full time and have families but I am NOT one of those people. I actually can't see being one of those people without SERIOUS pharmaceuticals...so if any of you are reading this (like you'd have time) my hat's off to you!

X-mas should be nice this year, the Wisconsin family and friends are having dinner here (I like to host) and I am mobile this year as opposed to last year when I was laid up in a cast and in excruciating, constant, uncontrolled pain that I can only now admit and even think about. I feel much better now (YAY surgery worked!) and am looking forward to getting back to the gym (I have been slacking these past few weeks of finals and projects)

Yay for semester break!

SOME ASSHOLE STOLE MY OBAMA MAGNET!

I am not the kind of person who wears my views on my car, my bag or any other part of my person. I prefer my lefty liberal self to fly under the radar for the most part. I never put things on my car. This time was different (it was a magnet and would come off after the election) and it was something I feel strongly about so I stuck it on. I would NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS dream of ripping off someone's "McCain-Palin" expression of opinion! Why on earth would someone steal mine? I am not naive enough to think that someone thought "Oh cool Obama magnet...I think I'll take it and put it on my car!"

This is why I do not put shit on my car.

So ya, I am older now but eh'

I had a fabulous weekend! My hubby [info]joshkassel , our son and our friends [info]deviledhoney her hubby and daughter all went to Prescott, AZ for the weekend. It was a bit of a spur of the moment trip ( we only threw the idea around a little over a week ago. Some other retired friends have a house up there (with a LOT of bedrooms) that they are selling and use as a getaway place. Prescott is a quasi half hippy half conservative small town with a lot of draw from Phoenix. It has accountants on Harleys and hemp sandal wearers and a LOT of old coots selling antiques. It was a lot of fun to meander around and look at all the history and general funk. The kids played well together and distracted each other enough that no one had to parent too much. We had a ton of great food (and wine) and walked around all day Sat going to museums and antique stores. There was some sort of festival going on at the prescott museum complex (Prescott was the seat of the Territorial govt.). There were a bunch of reanactors from all over and the place and period (frontier-victorian) and they played with the kids, there were games and all kinds of fun...and aside from a grumpy antique dealer who snapped at me when I asked him a question about a pickle dispenser, it was a lovely weekend.

Thanks all and keep well...I'll try to update this thing more often, but life is very very busy!

The universe is ramping up and things are getting busy and before they hit off the charts busyness I would like to take the opportunity to tell everyone that if you aren’t watching/tivoing “The Middleman” do! The show is on ABC Family which I know might be an initial turnoff but it is smart, funny, full of obscure/obscene references and not family friendly at all.

Good stuff!

As many of you know, last November I had surgery to correct the ankle I broke a couple of years ago. The surgeon said that it could to take up to a year to begin to heal even after the corrective surgery. While I am not "pain free" by a long shot, I am however able to do so much more than I had previously been able to do...and it's getting stronger and better every day!
I am hiking for up to an hour or more and working out taking a fairly intense body conditioning class at the racquet club (think aerobics with free weights)two to three times a week and...well unless you've been laid up for any reason for a long period of time it is hard to explain just how great that feels.
In addition to feeling better physically I am THRILLED to be going back to school next week! I know I complained a bit about my summer classes but my courses this fall look awesome! AND I'll be back working in a classroom with ELL students. I get along well with the teacher I am working with and it is her first ELL class so it will challenging but exciting.
I have this week off to putz around the house and get a few things done and then this weekend we are going here http://www.vacationrentals.com/vacation-rentals/40571.html
for two nights to get out of the heat (it has been a long hot summer) and just play out doors for a bit. I hope it gets chilly!

Lotsa STUFF!

Along with all the remodeling and whatnot (ceiling-carpet) and summer school, I have just found out that there is a separate teacher education program in Tucson. I knew the U of A had an extension program called U of A South, but I thought it was that same as the regular U of A program…well it’s not. It is a lot different. I ran into an advisor for the program last week and she told me a little about the differences…such as, you get a BS versus a BA and there is only a two semester foreign language requirement versus four and a few other key things that make it a WAY better fit for me.

So…this week I have applied to the UA and the UA South Edu program and have had to run around finding my immunization records filling out endless paperwork and putting rush orders on my transcripts. All this at the spur of the moment because I did not think I was ready-able to transfer until I had completed a little more math and Spanish!

I do not like to make decisions without having time to think a bit but in order to get everything done I had to make a lot of them right away... the upshot is, I’m going to the university in August! I am thrilled and nervous. This program is designed for returning students and people changing careers so there is a lot more flexibility in the class schedule. Students also get a personal advisor and a faculty advisor to help (handhold) the whole way which is very different from the standard UA operating procedure.

The down side is, that the campus is at the science and technology park which as some of you may know is practically in NEW MEXICO! But, they offer more distance and one day per week classes so that will make it bearable. (I hope)

My advisor says my application looks good but I am still holding my breath until it is official. It feels very strange to me that I do not know my fall schedule and it is late July.

Wish me luck!

It's Done!--happy 4th

Alright it is done, and it is not as horrible as I thought it would be! I even have a couple of days before school starts. It would have been nice to get away, but the ceiling needed to be done before parts of it fell on someone's head. Now if I could scrounge up a babysitter so I could enjoy a night out with the hubby. We have no big plans for the 4th...it'd be great to watch fireworks with the boy , but that would involve him staying out past 9:00pm and that just isn't going to happen yet. We are going to a park picnic thingie at the "Racquet Club" which sounds fancy but believe me it is not. It's mostly a bunch of wiled kids in that pool and running around and a cheesy bluegrass(or something equally cheesy) band playing. But the kids have fun and there's beer so eh. Have a great day everyone!

Work on the house

Yes, I realize it’s boring and predictable but, we’re having some work done. This is to be expected, we live in a very old house (original part turn of century and the main part 1940..tho likely built 38-39..we found old news papers in the walls) I decide to do this while I have a few precious days off of school…instead of say GOING ON VACATION.
So, we’re doing some stuff and I actually work for the contractor so I know the score. He says 2-3 days for the new ceiling… oh ya I think four or five …fine whatever! So we give the go ahead to put in a new ceiling (ours was falling down for quite some time now and was about to hit someone in the head)
The first hiccup is, the wood we picked out gets delivered on time, but at TWICE the quantity and FIVE TIMES the price we were quoted. It gets sent back, we head over to the lumberyard get the mess straightened out and the right stuff will be delivered the next morning of courts by “morning” they mean 11:45 and since it was Friday I had already sent the crew home…so now we’ve lost TWO days of work. The wood is finally delivered and is now sitting in the living room (we can’t keep it outside because it is supposed to rain) the living room is torn apart and the ceiling is full of holes and patches there is chalk everywhere and probably asbestos dust and other nasty crud…going to be a lovely weekend…keeping a 3-year old off the woodpile playground in his living room.

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.

I also got tagged by my hubby to do this and I'm not a cubicle drone either. I have a tendency to put the cable music channels when cleaning or doing something menial. I will not tag seven other people mostly because I don’t know seven other people and those that I do know are as busy as I am.

Help, Beatles 1963

Because for some reason this has become the boy’s favorite song eclipsing She Loves You and Yellow Submarine on the top in the car on the way to and from school list. I have listened to it up to four times in a row on a single trip and it has taken on a whole new meaning. I do absolutely LOVE the Beatles and I’m not ashamed to say it, but this is too much for me.

The Way I Am, Ingrid Michaelson

Because I have caught the song on the radio and thought it was sweet, then I saw her on the local cable access channel doing her show and you could tell she was unaccustomed to larger venues and it was charming.

The Story, Brandie Carlile

What can I say? I must be in a mood.

Trinity Session AND Caution Horses, Cowboy Junkies

I love both albums front to back.

You Know I'm No Good Amy Winehouse

I love her train wreck self and she ROCKS!

Honestly, I listen to NPR more than anything else. I would like to have the time-energy to listen to more music. Sometimes… I actually drive the car in complete silence!

Boy in a skirt?

incredulous

We (me and the boy) just got back from the nicest tea party given by our friend

[info]deviledhoney for her stepdaughter who just turned nine. The boy heard that it was a dress up party, and with his usual enthusiastic nature dressed to the nines with the tie he had from a wedding we attended last year and a tutu-ish pink and purple princess skirt he had talked his friend “out of” the last time he spent the night over with her and her brother.

We didn’t have time to get his hair cut this past week so in effort to do something with his hair we went spiky…along with the button down shirt, tie and skirt... I thought he looked very punk-rock!

After eating two cupcakes and a bunch of cookies with no nap he held up pretty good…and all the frosting landed on the skirt! The birthday girl was a great hostess and was very nice to the silly three-year-olds at “her” party.

Mothers Day

It's Mother's day...and because I'm a mom  it  ROCKS! I had a lovely breakfast in bed (something I never understood until actually becoming a mom) M-day used to be a source of pain and frustration because my own mother is a bi-polar nut job that I "divorced" 8 or so years ago and scenarios like another friend recently posted were all too common. I got some LOVELY flowers, two thoughtful cards and some additional pieces to the tea set that hubby had posted about on his blog a couple of weeks ago (fantastic additions I'll have to actually throw a tea party or something) I've been sipping tea out of the darling cups and reading a novel by Laurie Notaro instead of studying for my history final tomorrow (the Spanish-American war was short and WW1 can wait)...hummmm I think I'll take a nap!

Thanks everyone who has friended me!

I will try to write an interesting thing once in a while...mostly it'll be blathering about like this.

My friend has a husband who won't eat "fresh" eggs...as in eggs from actual chickens that he knows? She gets these eggs from her aunt who has chickens and gives her eggs. She doesn't want to be rude and say "my husband won't eat them" so she takes them and is now giving them to ME! I love "fresh" eggs they taste so much better than supermarket eggs... I can't wait to make a nicoise salad!

Finally!
